Experiments with Highly Charged Ions and Strong Fields
Funding source: Swedish Research Council - Vetenskapsrådet (VR) Period: 1/1/08 - 12/31/10 Funding: 3039000 SEK Description: Investigation of extreme atomic conditions with Highly Charged Ions (HCI) is a research field addressed at the new Stockholm Refrigerated Electron Beam Ion Trap (R-EBIT) at AlbaNova. These studies are needed for our understanding of the processes ongoing in extreme states of matter. New physical phenomena, new insight into our understanding of the structure and detailed interactions in atoms can be expected using highly-charged ions. We propose therefore the following four subjects of research at R-EBIT. 1. Characterization of nano-Capillaries and forming self-organizing guiding systems with highly-charged ions with the aim of microm-size beam focussing; 2. Recombination rate coefficients for astrophysics and plasma physics over a wide range of electron energies and charges of selected ions; 3. Tests of quantum electrodynamics in strong fields, as well as relativistic many-body effects, and magnetic interactions in heavy ions; 4. Precision mass measurements for fundamental physics problems using extremely highly charged ions to exploit their charge merits for high accuracy in atomic masses. |
