Description:
Towards a European Research Area The construction of PROFKNOW as a Specific Targeted Research Project is directed to emphasise activities dealing with “the emergence of the knowledge based society and new forms of relationships between its citizens, on one hand and between its citizens and the institutions, on the other”. This is done in four interrelated ways: • We are dealing with institutions of education and health that are of vital importance for the education and wellbeing of citizens in Europe. Our interest in the teaching and nursing professions from a “bottom-up” perspective will provide us with data from the intersection between these institutions and their clients from different levels in our societies. The working of this intersection is considered highly important for integration and social cohesion in Europe • We are focussing on the knowledge “at work” among professional actors in these institutions. We are researching practical professional and situated knowledge among teachers and nurses. This focus means that we will have a much more realistic view on the constraints and possibilities of paths towards a knowledge society in progress compared to studies dealing with codified knowledge and formal education only. • We are describing, analysing and comparing institutions of education and health in different European contexts with a focus on changes in the professional world of teachers and nurses. This means that we will produce a more differentiated view on these institutions and what it takes to work in them. • A specific focus is on the implications of the restructuring of these institutions (deregulation, marketization, governance by results, etc) for the teachers and nurses and their professional actions. This means that we will present studies that will inform on different governance models and their potentials and deficits.
