Dr. Örjan Bäckman has worked 42 years with visually impaired. Swedish and international pioneer in low vision and behind the set up of low vision clinics and a new profession: low vision therapist. In charge of training special teachers in low vision at SU. Frequent speaker in world conferences and writer of scientific articles. Co-author of the book: "Low Vision Training", translated into nine languages. Initiator of an international low vision therapist degree-program for developing countries in 1995. PhD in ophthalmiatrics at Karolinska Institute. Research area: re-establishing reading skills of persons with low vision. Seven years as an expert on special education (work in Ministries; evaluation of Swedish support) in developing countries (Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, China, India). Coordinator of SU cooperation with South Africa on inclusive education 2003-09. At present (2011-2013), involved in a SU/African project to strengthen inclusion as part of a democratic education in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa: "Learning for democracy: North/South Collaboration on Inclusive Education.”
