This proposal outlines a continuing program of work of the Stockholm University group on the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, which is scheduled to first take data Autumn 2009. The group´s proposed work comprises early data exploitation, hardware maintenance and upgrade development work, together with outreach activities. Building on our longstanding expertise, we shall make precision measurements of multilepton processes, thereby providing a test of the Standard Model in the new LHC energy regime and gaining sensitivity to exotic physics processes predicted in, eg, models of supersymmetry. We will also perform direct searches for physics processes beyond the Standard Model in the form of exotic stable massive particles which interact in the detector. We shall provide maintenance for those hardware components for which we have taken part in the design, construction and commissiong, namely the Tile Calorimeter read-out electronics and First Level Calorimeter Trigger. We also propose a program of work for the upgrades of the aforementioned subsystems. The sums requested cover partial salary cost for the principal applicant and travelling and subsistence costs for members of the SU ATLAS group and hardware maintenance and development costs. In addition, funding for new Ph.D. students is sought in order to help the group maintain our competitive advantage in our specialist analysis areas.

The research groups in elementary particle physics and system instrumentation physics at Stockholm university apply for continued support for their participation in the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s new accelerator LHC. The two research groups are contributing to the experiment by designing and constructing parts of the calorimeter digitization electronics and part of the first level calorimeter trigger. We are responsible for installation and commissioning of these detector components. In 2007 when data-taking will start our hardware activities will shift towards monitoring and tuning the performance of the detector, with main emphasis on these components, to ensure efficient and smooth operation of the experiment. The groups are also a driving force in the area of education and outreach. The Physics potential of the LHC experiments is very high; experiments will be performed in an energy regime where the so-called Standard Model of elementary particle physics gives mathematically inconsistent results. It is therefore close to certain that discoveries of new phenomena will be made at the LHC. Our research groups are preparing for this phase by theoretical studies and Monte Carlo simulation work. We are in particularly focussing on Supersymmetry and precision studies on production properties of top quarks and vector bosons. We estimate that the possibility to make discoveries that will throw light on how the Standard Model needs to be extended is high in these two areas.
