Research within the ATLAS and D0 experiments

D0 is one of the two experiments at the Tevatron at Fermilab. It is currently the highest energy accelerator in the world. The Swedish Consortium for participation in D0 has been members of the D0 collaboration since 2000, and have been very successful and made a large impact in the collaboration. The Consortium applies for fundings necessary to let the remaining Swedish students in D0 finalize their work. D0 has been a very important learning ground for our future work in the ATLAS experiment at the new LHC accelerator of CERN, which will become my major research activity in the coming years. The Physics potential of the LHC experiments is very high; experiments will be performed in an energy regime where the Standard Model of elementary particle physics gives mathematically inconsistent results. It is therefore close to certain that discoveries of new phenomena will be made at the LHC. The research group of Stockholm University is preparing for this phase by theoretical studies and simulation work. We are in particular focussing on Supersymmetry and precision studies on production properties of top quarks and vector bosons. We estimate that the possibility to make discoveries that will throw light on how the Standard Model needs to be extended is high in these two areas. In the near future I will concentrate on doing simulations of the first level forward jet trigger, as well as continuing the top quark studies in ATLAS. For this I apply for 50% of my salary.

Research within the ATLAS experiment

This is an application for support of salary at a level of 50% in order to enable me to take part in the ATLAS experiment. The Large Hadron Collider will start running this year. The ATLAS experiment is ready to take data. This was shown when the LHC successfully circulated beam in September last year. I have worked on one of the components of ATLAS, the First Level Calorimeter trigger and will continue to do so during the time for this application. The L1Calo is now fully installed and commissioned. Many different subjects will be studied based on data coming from ATLAS. I will concentrate on searches for supersymmetric particles with signatures containing leptons in the final state. As a preparation for real data I have taken part in a study of how to extract the number of fake isolated muons from real data which is a very difficult background to estimate. The method was demonstrated with a supersymmetry analysis of a di-muon sample. I will continue this work also including electrons in the final state. Searches for supersymmetric particles is very exciting since it is also a search for the dark matter that we know exists in the Universe. The lightest supersymmetric particle could be stable and produced when matter was created after Big Bang. The study of dark matter candidates is an ongoing work within the framework of the Linne funded Oskar Klein Center.
